Designing AI-Native Products
Designing AI-native products is not about bolting a language model onto an existing workflow. It requires rethinking how users interact with systems when intelligence is embedded directly into the product’s core.
Traditional software is deterministic: the same input reliably produces the same output. AI-driven systems are probabilistic by nature, and that shift changes how we design interfaces, define success, and build trust with users.
Start with the system, not the model
Teams often begin with model selection—GPT-4, fine-tuned LLMs, or open-source alternatives. In practice, the model is rarely the limiting factor.
The real challenge is designing a system that can safely and predictably incorporate intelligence. We focus first on the decision or capability being augmented. Only after clarifying where AI meaningfully reduces friction or enables new workflows do we select models and infrastructure.
Designing for trust and failure
AI systems will fail. Good AI-native products assume this upfront. Users should understand what the system knows, what it doesn’t, and how to recover when outputs are incomplete or incorrect.
Clear affordances, reversible actions, and human-in-the-loop escalation are not “nice to have.” They are foundational to long-term adoption.
